The characters are sympathetic, but again they read much like the cast of the first book with a few tweaks. One twist is so obvious, I'd maybe suggest reading this book first. This is a prequel, and if you've read (and reread) the first book as I have, there are few surprises. However, the story itself is a bit of a retread of the original.
